(Let\u2019s Talk About It)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever caught yourself rubbing your upper back or rolling your shoulders halfway through the day, you are&nbsp;<em>definitely<\/em>&nbsp;not alone. Between desk jobs, scrolling, driving, and carrying life (literally and emotionally), upper back and shoulder pain is one of the most common complaints people bring to massage therapists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what\u2019s actually going on back there?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" style=\"font-size:26px\"><strong>The Science-y Bit (But Not Too Nerdy)<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your upper back and shoulders are packed with muscles like the&nbsp;<strong>trapezius<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>rhomboids<\/strong>, and&nbsp;<strong>levator scapulae<\/strong>, which all help with posture, shoulder movement, and keeping your head from flopping forward. Stretch it out:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Doorway pec stretch<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 open up that chest! While it may seem counterintuitive, releasing the chest muscles actually helps your upper back. Think &#8220;release the opposing muscle group&#8221;- it really works.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shoulder rolls and neck circles<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 keep things moving.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Child\u2019s pose with arms stretched forward<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 total upper back relief.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong style=\"white-space: normal;\">Get on that foam roller<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: -webkit-standard; font-size: medium; white-space: normal;\">&nbsp;\u2013 <\/span>check out all the youtube videos that show how to foam roll your upper back  &#8211; here&#8217;s a good one!  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=x2YczbHH9JQ\">https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=x2YczbHH9JQ<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Heat + gentle movement:<\/strong><br>Use a heating pad or take a warm shower to loosen things up before stretching or foam rolling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3. Get up and move often:<\/strong><br>Set a timer if you\u2019re at a desk all day. Even 2 minutes every hour makes a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4. Tennis ball massage:<\/strong><br>Lean against a wall with a tennis ball between you and your shoulder blade, then gently roll around until you find \u201cthe spot.\u201d Stay and breathe into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5. Watch your posture (but don\u2019t obsess):<\/strong><br>No one has perfect posture all the time\u2014but check in with your shoulders and neck once in a while.
